It was erected in 1737. Legend tells that in 1736, Father Manuel Antunes, parish priest of Elvas, when he was riding a mule, fell twice and became quite shaken. With difficulty he went to a wooden cruise that was there at the Health site (where the farmer from the Tower of the Ark had died before). In his prayer, he made the promise to send a Mass and paint the cross. The promise was fulfilled after their improvements. A year later on the day of Kings and already with many people to watch the cross was reinstated starting the site to be invocation of the Lord Jesus of Mercy. Increasing popular devotion was built a niche for the image and later a hermitage. Organized parties and pilgrimages there was need for a larger temple (the present one).
In Elvas.
It is the center of one of the largest pilgrimages of the Alentejo, the São Mateus Fair (between 20 and 30 September).
