The Junín plains were known as the Pampus region, which until the arrival of the Incas was inhabited by a semi-savage, quarrelsome group of people whose rivals were the Tarumas. Meanwhile, the Mantaro Valley was inhabited by the Huancas. Inca Pachacútec conquered all these towns in 1460, which later became part of the Inca Empire. Huancayo became the main road of the region to rest on the Inca Trail.



Wool factories (known in Spanish asobrajes) were created during the viceroyalty, when weaving and weaving became a tradition that continues to this day. On September 13, 1825, Simón Bolívar issued a decree creating what is today the Junín Region, to commemorate his victory in the Pampas de Junín (Battle of Junín), the last charge of the royal cavalry in the western world where It was not a bullet fired, but just knowing was used. Great events of national importance occurred during this period: Huancayo was the seat of the Assembly that issued the 1839 Constitution and on December 3, 1854, Ramón Castilla signed a decree that granted freedom to Afro-Peruvian slaves.







Junin is the capital of the province of the same name, it has a climate that ranges from dry temperate to cold, its geography is mountainous and with plateaus ranging between 3,000 and 4,000 meters above sea level. Formerly it was known as ´´The Town of Kings´´.



The main economic activity in the area is the raising of sheep and auquenids, for which they take advantage of the pastures found in its great plain.



The agricultural soils of the Mantaro Valley are highly productive (potatoes, corn, beans). In them cattle and wool are raised and at the same time, a series of local industries of textiles, dairy derivatives and crafts are developed. In the Chanchamayo valley, coffee, fruit trees and woods of excellent quality are produced. In La Merced, cat's claw of medical importance is grown worldwide. In addition, very good citrus fruits, avocados and many other fruit trees are harvested. On the other hand, La Oroya is the largest mineral smelter in Peru. The region has the El Mantaro and Malpaso hydroelectric plants, both using the waters of the Mantaro River.







Main attractives



Convent of Santa Rosa de Ocopa. 25 km from the city of Huancayo. Built almost 250 years ago with the mission of evangelizing the people of the Amazon. Its library has more than 25 thousand volumes, keeping copies dating from the 15th century. It also has a natural museum and a church rebuilt in 1905 that preserves carved wooden altarpieces.

Cochas Chico and Cochas Grande. Villages 21 km north of Huancayo, where artisans prepare beautiful works in chipped mates.

Hualhuas. Town of artisans who specialize in handmade fabrics, rugs, alpaca ponchos and ornaments.

Tower Tower. 1.5 km from Cerro La Libertad. Tower-shaped rock formations, made by wind and rain erosion.

San Jerónimo de Tunán. District known for its silver jewelry. The local church keeps altars carved in the 17th century in Baroque and Churrigueresque style.

Ingenuity. Attractive natural place where the trout farm is located and can be enjoyed outdoors.

Sicaya. District of attractive landscapes with a church that keeps altars carved in wood during the colony.

Chupaca. It has a viewpoint from where you can see the Cunas River. It has a weekly fair that takes place on Saturdays.

Huayao Geophysical Observatory. 17 km from Huancayo. Center dedicated to recording the seismic movements that occur nationwide.

Sanctuary of Warivilca. Raised during the Wari empire. It keeps buildings and the sacred tree of the Molle. It has a site museum.

Sapallanga. It stands out for its natural settings and the archaeological remains of Ullacoto and Ahumaica.

Pucara. Town with great historical significance due to its participation during the Breña Campaign.

Cutivireni. Natural Reserve that is within the CC.NN. of the same name.

Salesian Museum. Next to the school of the same name. Large collection of stuffed animals and ceramic.
