The Cathedral ´´San Nicolas de Tolentino´´ Built in the 17th century, by the Augustinian Fathers. Its architecture is of the Republican type. In 1985, it was restored, currently being one of the most modern in the north of the country. It has a baroque style with works made in a semicircular arch on two of its levels, as they are large and small rooms. Its roof is made up of two-level skirts and showy pointed domes. The main altar is worked in wood with applications in the Baroque style. It is characterized by representing an oil painting (passage of the resurrection of Christ). It presents one of the most beautiful Christs due to the precision of its anatomical lines.
It is located in the city of Tumbes, between Paseo Libertadores and Paseo de la Concordia Peruana-Ecuatoriana, in front of the main square of the city.
On the walls of the Cathedral, there are windows decorated with stained glass, in their entirety with representative scenes of Christ, the Saints and the Virgin, which are surrounded by wide passageways on the outside, which are adorned and protected with large metal bars. iron. In addition to the cathedral, we find numerous churches very delicately decorated in subdued colors and wooden ornaments of the region, carved by hand, accompanied by various religious sculptures.
