In de restauratieoorlogen was er een duidelijke behoefte om het koninkrijk te verdedigen tegen het Spaanse offensief, vooral in grensdorpsteden en -steden.
Het is in deze context dat er verschillende vestingwerken werden gebouwd in deze plaatsen, namelijk in Estremoz. Niet echt een grensstad, het diende als de tweede verdedigingslinie van het grondgebied, vooral in logistieke ondersteuning (opslagplaats van wapens, voorraden en troepen). Het was D. João IV (1640-1656), de eerste van de Bragança's die regeerde in Portugal, die in 1642 aan João Pascácio Cosmander het ontwerp van de toekomstige veelhoekige wand van Estremocense oplegde. Dit werk zou het dorp beschermen tegen hypothetische aanvallen en vorderingen van de Spaanse troepen, en de nieuwe bastions werden aangepast voor zware artillerie-gevechten.

De Currais-deur werd rond 1670 ontworpen door de technische sergeant-majoor António Rodrigues en valt op door zijn monumentaliteit en artistieke samenstelling, met een keizerarend en griffioenen die op stukken artillerie stappen.
