In the Restoration Wars there was an obvious need to defend the Kingdom from the Spanish offensive, especially in frontier towns and cities.
It is in this context that several fortifications were built in these localities, namely in Estremoz. Not exactly a frontier town, it served as the 2nd line of defense of the territory, especially in logistical support (warehouse of arms, supplies and troops). It was D. João IV (1640-1656), the first of the Braganças to reign in Portugal, who in 1642 ordained to João Pascácio Cosmander the design of the future bracketed polygonal wall of Estremocense. This work would protect the village from hypothetical attacks and advances of the Spanish troops, and the new bastions were adapted for heavy artillery battles.

The Currais door was designed around 1670 by the engineering sergeant Major António Rodrigues and stands out for its monumentality and artistic composition, with an imperial eagle and griffins stepping on pieces of artillery.
