La planification de ce théâtre a commencé le 1 er mai 1916. Après plusieurs réunions, un comité a été créé pour la construction du théâtre. Plusieurs personnalités liées à Estremoz ont été créées: le Dr Marques Crespo, le Dr José Rosado da Fonseca, le Carlos Frederico Luna et José Maria Reynolds Graça Zagalo.
La terre d'implantation de cette propriété a été donnée par M. João Reynolds. Il était situé dans une rue (maintenant Avenida 25 de Abril) qui avait été "conquise" au mur seiscentista il y a quelques années, et était une zone où la ville d'Estremoz, à l'époque, s'étendait à une certaine vitesse.
Lorsque la terre a été prise, le plan de la propriété a été exécuté par Ernesto da Maia. Les travaux à leur tour sont dus à Manuel da Silva qui a exécuté le contrat de menuiserie, de panneaux publicitaires, etc. Le magnifique modelage en plâtre, l'œuvre d'António Martins Esteves et les peintures décoratives, sont issus des mains d'un peintre de Portalegre, Benvindo Ceia. Le premier éclairage électrique a été réalisé par José Luís Vergas da Rocha.
L'inauguration a eu lieu le 22 juillet 1922, en présence de la célèbre artiste portugaise Amélia Rey Colaço. Il y avait 816 actionnaires. Plus tard, la municipalité a repris ce joyau du théâtre portugais.

Il porte le nom de l'Alentejo "Bernardim Ribeiro", en l'honneur de ce poète du XVIe siècle, qui écrivait si bien au sujet de son amour pour sa cousine Aonia, prétendument l'Estrémocense D. Joana Tavares Zagalo, qui mourut au couvent des Clarisses d'Estremoz. .
