Le bâtiment existant est notoirement une réforme du dix-septième siècle, avec quelques éléments ultérieurs, tels que le clocher du dix-huitième siècle, ou les cloches des dix-neuvième et vingtième siècles.
L'intérieur ne comporte plus d'éléments antérieurs à la réforme du XVIIe siècle, étant de cette hauteur les lamelles de tuiles polychromes de la nef, les retables en stuc des chapelles latérales ou la chaire en marbre, pièce de bonne sculpture à caisson circulaire et à base carrée.
Cependant, au dix-neuvième siècle, en 1829 et 1889, le chœur comportait deux œuvres importantes qui éliminaient nombre des éléments les plus anciens. À partir de ce moment, les plâtres polychromes allusifs au Saint-Sacrement et au retable, également en stuc, sur fond de maçonnerie.

La date de la fondation de cette église est inconnue, car elle existait déjà en 1534. Túlio Espanca pense qu'elle a été construite à la fin du XVe siècle, à partir de l'extérieur cylindrique de la chapelle principale, présentant des caractéristiques typiquement manuélines. Un autre élément relativement archaïque est le portail principal de l'entrée, en marbre, que présente un aspect Renaissance, de bonne exécution technique et artistique.
